Finding a Paint-able Subject
Presented by Linda Smith
Saturday March 4, 2023. 10 am-3pm
Description: Creating a painting isn't about copying a perfectly composed photograph. In this workshop, you will learn how to interpret those reference photos that you have been collecting. You don't have to be a master photographer to take a useable reference picture. You will learn about what to look for in reference material, how to interpret reference photos, editing tips, and ultimately how to turn your reference material into a painting (or two or more!) complete with all the components of good composition. Bring several reference photos to work with and be prepared to paint!
Supply List:
• Bring your usual watercolor supplies: paint, palette, brushes, paper
(preferably Arches Cold Press 140 # paper, one or two sheets)
• Paper Towels, water container, masking tape, sponge, mounting board
(gator board, plexi, wood, etc.)
• Sketchbook, pencil, eraser
• Tracing paper
• Graphite paper
• REFERENCE PHOTOS!!! As many as you like. They can be color copies or black and white. 8 x 10 inches is the preferable size (copy paper size). Make sure the photos are clear. Do not worry if the composition isn't that good. If there is something in the photo you like, bring it along. Croppers: L mats. To make 'L' shape croppers, just take an old 'white' mat and cut them to create two 'L' shapes. Each cropper should be at least 8 x 10 inches or larger.
