See the second annual “Get Smart With Art/Stay Smart With Art” Exhibit the North Gallery through May 3, 2010.  With the addition of a two week period beyond last year’s exhibit, you have a better opportunity to enjoy these two very special groups of artists.

Get Smart With Art is a very popular after school program for kids from 9 to 13 years of age. Since September these young artists have met weekly to explore the versatility of clay and acrylic paint. During the month of April they will discover the joys of watercolor painting under the direction of Char Lang, well known local watercolor instructor.

These student artists are often left behind by grade oriented school programs.  GSWA strives to unlock the creativeness in each participant.  Each child is encouraged to express their art their way without fear of judgment. They receive the tools needed to interact in a non-competitive environment and learn to enjoy the excitement of their own creative voice.  Studies have shown that creative thinking helps in all aspects of a child’s life.  The kids are encouraged to try everything at least once before they decide whether they like it or not.

Stay Smart With Art is geared to the abilities of residents of Highland Manor Care Center. Art is for all ages and all physical abilities.  Involvement in the creative process is stimulating and invigorating for all the participants. It is always amazing to see what this group of older artists can create. Many struggle against severe handicaps such as stroke, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, dementia, or macular degeneration. But every week they are there waiting to put paint on paper to make beautiful art. The instructors, Mariann Jenkins and Diana Coonradt, have witnessed dramatic changes that are nothing short of miraculous.

In the beginning of the program many literally could not hold a brush with out help.  They now paint on their own each week.  One resident who inspires everyone has had a stroke and could no longer use her dominate hand.  Did she let that stop her?  Not in the least.  She has learned to paint with her non-dominate hand.  Did she struggle?  Yes indeed, but the struggle is worth it.

You can do your part by viewing the art on display and leaving written comments about the exhibit in a guest book.  Don’t let this opportunity pass to see this special exhibit presented by the Virgin Valley Artist’s Association and the “Get Smart With Art/Stay Smart With Art” program and see what these two groups have accomplished.

There will also be a special reception for each group on April 21, 2010. Plan now to attend and meet the SSWA artists from 10:00 AM to 12 Noon and for the GSWA students from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.  There you can meet and talk with the artists themselves.  Your presence will mean a great deal to the participants in each program.

Both GSWA/SSWA are made possible by donations from the Nevada Arts Council, Virgin Valley Artist’s Association, Greater Mesquite Arts Foundation and the city and citizens of Mesquite. If you wish to help a donation box will be located in the North Gallery and volunteers are always appreciated.
